How to Make CBD Oil Effects Last Longer

CBD is a hot commodity right now that everyone wants their hands on. The recent explosion of CBD has caused many questions—and has left many wondering about CBD. Click here to read our other blog on CBD that explores how long CBD lasts in the body.

The best way to understand how to make CBD oil last longer is first to understand that the way CBD has ingested changes both the onset and lasting amount of time that you will experience the plant. For starters, inhalation, either through vaping or smoking is the best way to experience the effects immediately as the product is onset instantly. Whereas ingesting cannabis will take longer for it to kick in, but it will also last longer in the system. The amount of time it will take to feel the effects through ingestion is entirely dependent on your body–i.e. how fast you metabolize food and what you ate before ingesting CBD.

Below are the main methods which will explain the pros and cons of consuming CBD and which methods extend the presence of CBD in the body:

Consuming CBD orally by putting a few drops of oil under the tongue is the most common method. It is very convenient and easy to do. However, this isn’t the most effective method if you want to feel the benefits instantly. By swallowing the oil, you prevent CBD from entering your bloodstream immediately. Instead, the CBD has to travel through the digestive tract and, eventually, the liver, where it is broken down before finally reaching the bloodstream.

In fact, research has shown that when the liver metabolizes CBD compounds, they undergo a phenomenon called the “first-pass effect.” The first-past effect is when cytochrome P450 (CYP450) oxidases enzymes in the liver and reduce CBD concentration before the remainder is finally sent to the bloodstream and circulated throughout the body.

It is because of this that oral consumption of CBD is a rather inefficient method of consumption compared with inhalation or sublingual administration. This is because only about 5% of swallowed CBD ends up in the bloodstream (low bioavailability).

Additionally, when you ingest CBD, it can take anywhere from 1-2 hours before the effects of CBD will kick-in.

Sublingual is considered more effective then ingestion, this is when you put a few drops of oil under the tongue and hold it for 2-4 minutes. After 2-4 minutes, you want to use your tongue to rub the remainder on the inside of your cheeks before swallowing. By consuming CBD sublingually, you bypass the digestive system and liver because CBD transfers to the bloodstream via the mucous membranes located in the mouth. Sublingual consumption avoids the “first-pass” metabolism process, where CBD molecules are broken down in the liver, allowing it to enter the bloodstream sooner and in more abundance than ingestion.

Like sublingual consumption, inhalation is also an effective way to consume cannabis. This is because of the rapid rate in which the product is absorbed into the lungs. When inhaled, CBD is transferred into the bloodstream—which has higher bioavailability. Additionally, research shows that CBD reaches peak concentrations in plasma within 3 minutes after inhalation, meaning the effects can be felt shortly after use.

However, when inhaling cannabis, it can be found in the bloodstream for up to 72 hours after smoking.

There are many different forms of topical CBD where the product has been infused, including lotions, creams, salves, and other health and wellness products. Topicals are designed to be absorbed through the surface of the skin. In Topicals, the CBD interacts with localized cannabinoid receptors after it starts to absorb. In most cases, CBD-infused topicals should be applied liberally because they often have a low cannabinoid absorption rate. By applying a lot of creams, you allow more CBD to pass through the cells on the outermost layer of the skin (also known as the keratinocyte membranes)

When CBD is applied topically, it has a permeability rate that is ten times higher than THC. Additionally, CBD effects peak after about 90 minutes.
